The Management Entities of the supply system multi-municipal of drinking water from the Grand Oporto has received, of the part of consumers worried the warnings about commercial campaigns door to door, to promote the sale of household appliances for the treatment of tap water.
In these campaigns are conducted experiences and provided information that lead consumers to believe that the water distributed in public is poor quality and with potential negative impacts on human health, which is absolutely false. These experiences consisting in applying an electric current to the tap water, which makes change the state of the chemical constituents of the water through a process called electrolysis. The action of the electric current causes the formation of abundant brownish or black foam on the water surface and its heating.
The phenomena observed in the electrolysis of a tap water are fully expected due to the presence of mineral salts (such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium) and other elements (like iron), which characterize a natural water treated and equilibrated the most demanding complying with the legal limits for human consumption. These phenomena don´t indicate any deterioration in the quality of tap water, and any false statements to the contrary.
The water distributed in public network and harvested taps consumer is subjected to hundreds of thousands of annual reviews, in laboratories, and the results are controlled by the Health Authority (Health Delegates), as well as the sector regulator - ERSAR. The legal limits of conformity of the water are extremely demanding and were imposed by the EU Directive, in line with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO). Consistently, the results show that, in all of the public network from the Grand Oporto, is distributing a high quality product that can be consumed with the maximum safety without any additional treatments.
The Management Entities reaffirm to all consumers that tap water has minerals and other elements that make a balanced and safe product for human consumption.
